Ice cream trucks seems to embody the essence of childhood, especially those eery music-box tunes they blast through the neighbourhood as they roll on by. In 1970s Sydney that song was always Greensleeves (and it remains so today) but each country tends to have its own ice cream truck theme. Those in France play Frère Jacques and in America it’s often The Entertainer, a ragtime tune made famous by the film The Sting. In 1960, though, US-based Mister Softee hired a jingle writer for a radio ad and the tune he wrote was so addictive that it’s since become the most widely recognised modern ice cream jingle in the world.
