The character Dr Smith may have been a lost disgrace but the actor who played him, Jonathan Harris, was anything but. When Harris was cast as the cowardly villain at the age of 52, the show’s creators planned to kill him off within a few episodes. But Harris’s comic portrayal so delighted the fans of Lost In Space that he soon became the primary focus of the series, to the mortification of its stars.
