The Black & Decker Corp. was founded by S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker as a small machine shop in Baltimore in 1910 when both men were 27. In 1917, they invented the portable electric drill by obtaining a patent for a hand-held drill combining a pistol grip and trigger switch.
