Long before Australia Post, there was Isaac Nichols, the English ex-convict appointed as the first Postmaster of NSW in 1809. Nichols job was to collect all letters and parcels arriving by ship on Sydney’s wharves, thereby avoiding the chaos of people rushing aboard to collect their mail. Nichols would then post a list of recipients outside his house on George Street and in the pages of The Sydney Gazette. Recipients paid a shilling per letter to collect mail from Nichols’ home, with parcels costing slightly more.
