Launched in 1937, Polaroid created and popularised instant photography, creating a monopoly in the field and inspiring generations of artists, including Warhol, Helmut Newton, Mapplethorpe and Keith Haring, who helped make the brand a cultural icon. But as time passed and the world switched to digital photography, Polaroid lagged behind and in 2001 they filed for bankruptcy. A major reason for their failure was that Polaroid’s executives continued to believe in the importance of the paper print. They couldn’t see that the photo album was bound to be replaced by the digital slide show.
