Broadcast by ABC-TV from 1974 until 1987, Countdown was a weekly music program that could be called Australia’s Ed Sullivan Show. Classic Countdown moments include Ian “Molly” Meldrum referring to the Queen as “your mum” to the horror of interviewee Prince Philip; British singer Billy Idol explaining to Molly that he’d “had some great sex” since arriving in Australia for the Countdown Awards; and an inebriated Iggy Pop constantly mocking Molly during regular segment Humdrum.
